Cecily Shrimpton

Cecily Shrimpton's practice deals with how women negotiate motherhood in todays modern society. She considers the way women have been regarded in their decisions to have or not have children and the conditions to which they exist. Shrimpton's own dilemma exists between the realms of traumatic family history and the pressure she feels to succeed as a young woman, made possible only by the fight against indoctrinated views upon gender roles and norms of females. Her work responds to the ‘putting off’ the immediate want and need for being a mother that she feels. The notion of a ‘Void’ has been re-occurring motif in her work explored as the absent of a person. This void can be interpreted in the grandmother she never knew or met and the harrowing decision she made to give up Shrimpton's mother at birth; or, in own childlessness, and the decisions she must make in order to ground her place in this world. Biography Cecily Shrimpton graduated from University of Salford in 2016. She is part of the L7 collective of female artists. Cecily undertook the PAPER studio residency in 2016.
