Ruby Tingle

Ruby’s practice is primarily concerned with the reconstruction of familiar forms to present and document the extraordinary as authentic. A variety of media including paper cut outs, the readymade, animal matter and sounds are collected, manipulated and reassembled to create new ambiguous forms as works on paper, performances, installations, films and pieces of music. These collages aim to present an unnatural history with it’s own folklore, where the boundaries between cryptozoic speculation and scientific evidence are obscured. A fascination with herpetology, it's history, symbolism and future conservation, roots her material and conceptual investigations. By placing herself within her work, Ruby creates fleeting self portraits which allow for a vicarious existence. Here she is able to document different aspects of her ‘Self’ and embellished accounts of personal experiences, set within her own invented myths. Her music and lyrics support these visual works; collected sound recordings are digitally manipulated, collated and used to create songs, which are then performed in response to specific sites and events. Biography Ruby Tingle graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2011. She is represented by PAPER Gallery and is their permanent Artist in Residence. She was also awarded runner up in the GM Arts Prize 2016. Recent exhibitions include 'Into a Light' at Saatchi Gallery, 'Message from Manchester', 48 Hours Neukölln 2018 in Berlin, 'Like the Lines of a Hand' at Centre for Recent Drawing London, Un Staged at Leicester Print Workshop and the HOME Manchester Open. Solo shows include 'Ermine' at Chetham's Library and 'The Land Is' at PAPER Gallery, both in 2017. Commissioned live works include performances at Manchester Art Gallery, The Manchester Museum, The Manchester Contemporary and Not Quite Light Night; she also performed a live set with long term collaborator Dirty Freud at Glastonbury 2019.
