Ruby Tingle - The Land Is
Ruby Tingle's solo exhibition, The Land Is, combines new artworks and a living portrait, alongside a new album of original music, The Land Is, which will be launched at the exhibition opening. The exhibition brings to fruition many of the ideas that Ruby commenced during her Exploring PAPER Residency during the Summer of 2016. During the exhibition, Ruby will present a series of living portraits on selected Saturdays. Performance is used as a platform for the large-scale translation of these ideas, forcing her interaction with the three-dimensional collage installations she creates. Combining live music, performance, and installation, visitors will be able to engage directly with Ruby in PAPER's intimate space. Ruby’s collages and drawings are a response to the album and take the form of specimens and findings: an invented collection of the biological world by an amateur naturalist. Her works have developed sculpturally and expanded in scale, transforming the gallery into a large vitrine containing artwork, music, found materials, objects, and Ruby herself. Ruby’s practice deconstructs and reworks familiar images, objects, and sounds to assemble ambiguous and extraordinary forms. Grounded in natural history, her work is littered with references to creatures that share the globe. Her works deal with a private symbolism and employ self-portraiture as a tool to exist vicariously in between states. These transformations allow Ruby to create an alternate folklore and natural history where boundaries between human and animal are obscured.
