PAPER are pleased to present the work of Manchester-based artist, Vincent James, at the 11th Art Fair Suomi 2017. Art Fair Suomi is an international contemporary art festival gathering together 1000 works of contemporary art from performance and photography to installations and sound art. The programme of the festival includes conversations, artists’ talks, seminars, as well as live and video performances. With its displays and programme AFS17 aims to reach the public, presenting art for wide audiences, and to create circumstances for professionals to meaningfully meet and network.
Vincent is taking part in a three week residency in Helsinki developing new work for his solo exhibition at Art Fair Suomi 2017. Vincent has created new stop-motion animations using the Cable Factory as both an inspiration and setting for the work. The traces of industrial history still evident in the Cable Factory along with the scale of this unique building have challenged Vincent to produce ambitious new work.
Using objects appropriated from cartoons as a starting point, Vincent makes artwork across a range of media including sculpture, collage and animation. In these work props dislocated from different cartoon worlds collide, creating surreal and whimsical interactions. His work draws on an ever-expanding catalogue of appropriated objects.
